Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening: Everything You Need to Know

Today, we want to talk to you about a dental procedure that often goes unnoticed but can make a big difference in both your oral health and smile aesthetics: crown lengthening.

What does crown lengthening involve?
Crown lengthening is a minor surgical procedure we perform to expose more of the tooth structure by removing or reshaping excess gum tissue and, in some cases, the bone that surrounds the tooth. This allows for proper dental restorations or improves the appearance of your smile.

Many patients visit our clinic concerned about having “small teeth” or a “gummy smile,” without realizing there’s a safe and effective solution.

Why is crown lengthening performed?
Our periodontist may recommend crown lengthening if you’re experiencing any of the following conditions:

Gummy smile: This happens when an excessive amount of gum tissue is visible when you smile, making your teeth appear smaller. Typically, if there’s more than 3 millimeters of visible gum tissue, crown lengthening can be considered.

Dental malformations: If your teeth appear too short or square, or if there’s excess bone around them, the issue might not be a gummy smile, but it can still be corrected with aesthetic crown lengthening to enhance your smile.

Subgingival cavities: These are cavities that develop below the gum line and sometimes reach the dental pulp (the inner part of the tooth with nerves and blood vessels). After a root canal treatment, crown lengthening may be necessary to expose enough tooth structure for a proper restoration.

Root resorption or orthodontic shifting: In some cases, we recommend crown lengthening for patients who have experienced root resorption due to infection or the movement of adjacent teeth caused by orthodontics.

What are the potential benefits of this procedure?
Exposes more of the tooth structure to allow the placement of a filling, crown, or bridge

Helps avoid the extraction of a tooth

Facilitates better cleaning and helps prevent cavities

Improves the aesthetics of your smile

How should I prepare?
Before scheduling your procedure, our periodontist will review your medical history and X-rays. You may also be advised to have a dental cleaning before the surgery to reduce the risk of infection by removing bacteria, plaque, and tartar.

If crown lengthening is being done to allow room for a crown, we may place a temporary crown on the tooth before the surgery. This lets the periodontist see how the final crown will fit once the tooth has been lengthened and the surrounding gums have healed. A permanent crown is usually placed about three months after healing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the procedure take?
Usually between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of teeth involved.

How long does it take to heal?
Initial healing typically takes 7 to 10 days, with full recovery in 6 to 8 weeks.

Is crown lengthening permanent?
Yes, the results are permanent. Once tissue is removed, it does not grow back.

Can I have the procedure done for cosmetic reasons only?
Absolutely. Many people choose crown lengthening purely to enhance the appearance of their smile.
